Trimlight: cost, warranty, reviews, and how to compare a quote

Trimlight is a professionally installed permanent outdoor lighting system built around a patented colour-matched channel that is designed to disappear into the roofline, controlled from the Trimlight Edge app. It is sold exclusively through a network the manufacturer describes as more than 300 factory-trained local dealers; there is no retail or DIY version. Trimlight publishes two things most brands do not: an approximate price per linear foot, and a lifetime product warranty on core components with a minimum one-year labour warranty from the installing dealer. This guide covers what the system is, what those published numbers mean for your quote, what to check in reviews, and how to compare Trimlight against the alternatives.

What the system actually is

Trimlight's site leads with the channel. It describes a patented, colour-matched channel designed to disappear into a home's roofline, with the wiring concealed inside it, available in multiple colours to match trim. Residential installs come in 6-inch, 9-inch or 12-inch light spacing, which is a real choice: tighter spacing reads as a continuous line and costs more per foot; wider spacing reads as distinct points and costs less.

• Control. The Trimlight Edge app handles custom colours, patterns, schedules, timers and music sync, with cloud access and compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, per the manufacturer.
• Colour mixing. Trimlight states that its residential product mixes colour from red, green and blue rather than carrying a dedicated white channel. That matters if plain warm white for everyday use is your main reason for buying; ask to see it in person.
• Lifespan basis. The manufacturer rates its residential LEDs at roughly 50,000 hours, which is the figure its lifetime warranty is built on.

What Trimlight says it costs

In its own comparison post, Trimlight gives an approximate price per linear foot and says full projects generally land in a range that runs to several thousand dollars or more depending on scope. That is a manufacturer's national figure. Your dealer sets the actual price, and the same factors that move every permanent lighting quote move this one: length of run, number of corners and peaks, height and access, where the power comes from, and which spacing you choose.

The practical use of a published range is as a sanity check. If a quote is far outside it, ask why. There can be good reasons, a difficult roofline, a long attic run, but you should hear them. Our cost guide explains each factor with ranges.

The warranty, and what it does and does not cover

Trimlight's warranty is the most specific thing on its site and the thing its dealers lead with. As published by the manufacturer:

• Lifetime product warranty on core components, based on the manufacturer's estimated lifespan of those components. Trimlight has described this as covering LEDs, channel, wiring and controller.
• Minimum one-year labour warranty from the installing dealer. Dealers can offer more; one year is the floor.
• Replacement parts free through local dealers, though the manufacturer notes labour fees may apply outside the initial labour warranty period.
• Does not transfer when you sell the home, per the manufacturer.

Two things to understand. "Lifetime" is defined by the manufacturer's estimated component lifespan, not by yours; read the definition. And the split between product and labour is where the real cost of a failure lives: after year one, the part may be free and the visit may not be. Ask your dealer, in writing, what a service call costs in year three.

What to look for in Trimlight reviews

Because Trimlight is dealer-only with a large network, reviews are overwhelmingly about a specific dealer rather than the product. That is useful if the review is about your dealer and nearly useless if it is not.

• Find your dealer's reviews, not the brand's. Search the dealer's business name. A five-star Trimlight dealer in Texas tells you nothing about the one in Ohio.
• Separate product complaints from dealer complaints. "The channel colour was wrong" and "nobody came back to fix a section" are dealer issues. "White light looks slightly blue" is a product characteristic of RGB mixing, and worth knowing about before you buy.
• Weight reviews from a year or more after install. Warranty handling, app reliability and whether the dealer is still in business only show up later.
• Discount comparisons written by rivals. Many of the pages comparing Trimlight to Jellyfish or Gemstone are written by dealers of the other brand. Read them for the facts, not the verdict.

Trimlight versus the alternatives

The genuine differences: Trimlight is the only one of these that is strictly dealer-only, the only one publishing a lifetime product warranty, and the one that states plainly it has no dedicated white channel. If you want everyday white light, compare it against EverLights or ask other brands' dealers about their white handling. If you want a published warranty to hold a dealer to, Trimlight's is the clearest.

How to find a Trimlight dealer, and why to get another quote too

Trimlight's dealer locator shows Trimlight dealers only. A directory shows every permanent lighting installer in your area and what they carry, so you can get a Trimlight quote and a rival quote from one search. When you have them, ask each installer:

1. Have you installed on a house like mine? Ask to see it.
2. Which channel colour, and which spacing? Ask to see samples of both against your trim.
3. How do you handle corners, peaks and transitions between roof heights?
4. Where does the controller go, and how is it powered and wired?
5. What labour warranty do you offer beyond the one-year minimum, and what does a service call cost after that? In writing.
6. What is in the quote and what is extra?
7. When can you do it?
