Jellyfish Lighting: cost, reviews, and how to find an installer

Jellyfish Lighting is a professionally installed permanent outdoor lighting system: LED lights set inside a colour-matched track along your roofline, wired inside that track with no exterior power supply, and controlled from the Jellyfish app. It is sold through the company's own corporate locations and a network of authorised dealers, and Jellyfish also offers a do-it-yourself route. On its pricing page the manufacturer publishes an approximate cost per foot plus a controller charge for its corporate installs, and states plainly that dealers set their own prices. It is the most-searched professional brand in the category. This guide covers what you are buying, what the manufacturer says about cost, what to look for in reviews, and how to get quotes from installers who carry Jellyfish and its rivals.

What the system actually is

Jellyfish describes its product as installed "under eaves and behind trim" with a matching track colour, so that by day the system blends into the house. Three details on its site are worth knowing because they are the things installers of rival brands will contrast themselves against.

• Wiring enclosed in the track. Jellyfish states that wires are enclosed in the track with "attic jumps", and that there are no exterior power supplies. In practice that means the power and control hardware lives inside the house or attic rather than in a box on the wall, and there is no visible cable along the eave.
• 16-gauge, four-wire design. The manufacturer states that if one light goes out the rest keep working. Older or cheaper string designs can drop a whole section when one module fails; this is Jellyfish's answer to that.
• App control. Colours, patterns and schedules are set from the Jellyfish app. As with every brand in this category, the app is where you live with the product, so try it before you commit.

What Jellyfish says it costs

Jellyfish is unusual among the professional brands in publishing a price. Its pricing page gives an approximate cost per linear foot for the lights plus a separate controller charge, and notes that installation difficulty, location and time of year affect the number. The same page says, in as many words, that this is the approximate price for installation by corporate locations and that authorised dealers operate independently and their pricing varies.

Read that carefully. It means a Jellyfish quote from your local dealer can land above or below the manufacturer's figure, for the same product, depending on the dealer's costs and how they price corners, peaks and access. It also means the per-foot number is the beginning of a conversation, not the total. The controller is a fixed cost that matters more on a short run than a long one, and the things that move a quote most, length, corners, height and where the power comes from, are the same for every brand. Jellyfish also offers financing through its site. Whether that is a good deal depends entirely on the terms, which change; read them rather than the headline.

What to look for in Jellyfish reviews

Search "jellyfish lighting reviews" and you will find the manufacturer's testimonials, dealer pages, YouTube walkthroughs and Reddit threads. The useful signal is in the last two, and it is remarkably consistent across brands: owners who are happy talk about the install, and owners who are unhappy talk about the install.

Things to weigh when you read them:

• Is the reviewer describing the product or the dealer? "It stopped working and nobody called back" is a dealer review. "The track colour is a shade off my trim" is an install review. "The app is confusing" is a product review. Sort them before you count them.
• Look for reviews a year or more after install. The first week always looks great. The questions that matter, does the app still connect, has a section dropped, did the warranty claim get handled, only show up later.
• Discount comparisons written by dealers of a rival brand. Several of the pages that rank for Jellyfish comparisons are written by installers who sell Trimlight or a pixel-LED alternative. They may be accurate, but they are not neutral.
• Note the region. Dealer quality varies by area, and a review from another state tells you about that dealer, not yours.

Jellyfish versus the alternatives

If you have a Jellyfish quote and a quote for another brand, here is what is genuinely different and what is not.

Two things stand out. First, Jellyfish and Trimlight are the two brands willing to publish an approximate price, which makes them easier to sanity-check a quote against. Second, if plain warm-white light for everyday use is a priority, ask every installer directly about a dedicated white channel; it is one of the few places the hardware genuinely differs, and Jellyfish's site does not say either way.

How to find a Jellyfish installer, and why to get other quotes too

Jellyfish's own site will route you to a corporate location or a dealer. That works, but it shows you Jellyfish dealers only. A directory shows you every permanent lighting installer in your area and what they carry, so you can get a Jellyfish quote and a rival quote from the same search and compare them on the things that matter.

When you have them, ask each installer:

1. Have you installed on a house like mine? Ask to see it.
2. Which track colour, and can I see a sample against my trim?
3. How do you handle corners, peaks and the transitions between roof heights?
4. Where does the controller go, and how does the wiring get there? For Jellyfish specifically, ask how the attic jump is routed on your house.
5. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and is your labour included? In writing. Jellyfish's warranty terms were not on the pages we checked, so get them from the dealer.
