Oelo Lights: cost, warranty, reviews, and how to compare a quote

Oelo is a professionally installed permanent outdoor lighting system: LEDs in a low-profile track matched to your home, controlled from Oelo's cloud-based app, and sold through certified dealers organised into tiers. It is positioned for both residential and commercial buildings, which is less common in this category. Oelo publishes two things worth knowing before you get a quote: a warranty that differs by who installs it, seven years for installs by its authorised, preferred and platinum dealers and five years for contractor or customer DIY installs, and hardware claims of an IP68 water rating and a 100,000-hour LED rating. What the system actually is

Oelo's own material describes the system as invisible by day and expressive by night, and makes a few specific claims:

• Mounting. Low-profile tracks that match the home and, per the manufacturer, will not cause damage. As with every professional brand, the track is what makes the system near-invisible by day, and the installer's cutting at corners is what makes or breaks that.
• Hardware ratings. IP68 water rating, described as fully submersible, a V-0 fire rating, and LEDs rated for 100,000 hours of use, per Oelo. Those are stronger stated ratings than most rivals publish; they are the manufacturer's numbers and you should read the definitions.
• Control. A cloud-based app with, per Oelo, more than six million hues, custom preset programs, brightness and scheduling, and ten movement settings for patterns.
• Residential and commercial. Oelo positions separately for commercial buildings, which matters if you are lighting a storefront or office rather than a house.

What the ratings actually mean

Oelo publishes stronger hardware ratings than most rivals, and they are worth translating. IP68 is the top of the ingress-protection scale for dust and water: the second digit, 8, means the unit is rated for continuous immersion beyond one metre, which is why Oelo describes the lights as fully submersible. For a roofline that will never be underwater, the practical meaning is that rain, ice and pressure-washing are well inside the rating. V-0 is a flammability classification from UL 94; it means a sample stops burning within seconds of the flame being removed and does not drip burning material. It is a materials rating, not a promise about your house. The 100,000-hour LED figure is a manufacturer lifespan estimate; at four hours a night that is decades, so the LEDs are unlikely to be what fails. Connections, the controller and the mounting are, and those are down to the install. Ask for the definitions in writing if any of these ratings is the reason you are choosing Oelo.

The two-tier warranty, and why it matters

Oelo is the only brand in this category we found publishing a warranty that depends on who installs the system. Effective the start of 2024, per the manufacturer: seven years for installs by its authorised, preferred and platinum dealers, and five years for installs by other contractors or by the customer.

Read that as two pieces of information. First, Oelo openly supports DIY and third-party installs, which most professional brands do not, and stands behind them for five years. Second, the two-year difference is Oelo telling you, in warranty terms, how much it thinks a trained dealer is worth. If you are choosing between a certified dealer and a general contractor who has fitted a few, the warranty gap is part of the price comparison.

As with every brand, ask separately what labour is covered and for how long. A parts warranty does not necessarily pay for the visit.

What Oelo says it costs

Nothing, on its site. Like Gemstone and EverLights, Oelo does not publish a per-foot figure or a project range. Your dealer sets the price, and it moves with the same factors as every brand: length of run, corners and peaks, height and access, where the power comes from. What to look for in Oelo reviews

Oelo has a smaller search footprint than Jellyfish or Trimlight, so there are fewer reviews to read and more of them are dealer pages. The ones that matter:

• Your dealer's reviews, by business name. The tiered dealer system means dealer quality is the variable. Search the specific business, not the brand.
• Commercial installs, if that is your use. Oelo's commercial positioning is a real differentiator; look for reviews from business owners, which will talk about different things, brightness, scheduling, durability, than homeowners do.
• Reviews from a year or more in. The IP68 and lifespan claims are long-run claims; only long-run reviews can speak to them.
• Rival-dealer comparisons. Pages ranking Oelo against Trimlight or Jellyfish are usually written by a dealer of one of them. Facts, not verdicts.

Oelo's dealer pages show Oelo dealers only. A directory shows every permanent lighting installer in your area and what they carry. When you have quotes, ask each installer:

1. Are you an Oelo authorised, preferred or platinum dealer? It decides which warranty tier applies.
2. Have you installed on a house, or building, like mine? Ask to see it.
3. Which track colour, and can I see it against my trim?
4. How do you handle corners, peaks and transitions?
5. Where does the controller go, and how is it wired?
6. What labour is covered, and for how long, beyond the parts warranty? In writing.
7. When can you do it?
