How permanent Christmas lights are installed, and where DIY goes wrong

A professional permanent lighting install takes a day or two for most homes and follows the same sequence everywhere: measure the roofline, decide where the power and controller live, mount a colour-matched track along the eave, cut and route it around corners and peaks, hide the wiring, weatherproof every connection, program the system and hand over the app. A DIY kit compresses that into an afternoon with adhesive bases, a plug-in adapter and a fixed-length run. Both produce lights on the roofline. What separates an install that is still working in three years from one that is drooping by spring is not the brand; it is the mounting, the weatherproofing, and whether the run was planned for the house before anyone climbed a ladder. This guide walks through both paths and the five places the DIY path most often goes wrong.

What a professional install involves

The steps below are what to expect and, more usefully, what to ask about. An installer who skips one is telling you something.

  1. Site walk and measurement. The installer walks the roofline with you, measures every section, and notes corners, gable peaks, dormers, height changes and where the overhang comes and goes. This is where the quote comes from. A quote produced from a satellite image or a phone call has skipped this step.
  2. Power and controller placement. The system needs a controller and a power supply. The installer decides where they live, typically a garage, attic, utility room or a weatherproof enclosure, how they are fed, and how the cable gets from there to the first light without showing. Professional systems are usually wired to a dedicated supply rather than plugged into a patio outlet.
  3. Track mounting. An aluminium channel colour-matched to your trim is fixed along the eave or fascia with screws, section by section. The track is what makes the system near-invisible by day and what carries the wiring. Its placement, just inside the soffit edge, on the fascia, or behind trim, is chosen per section during the walk; the roofline lighting guide covers the options.
  4. Cutting and routing. The track is cut to length on site, mitred at gable apexes, and joined at corners so the light spacing stays even all the way round. Dormers are lit as separate features or skipped by agreement. Height changes are bridged with the connecting cable hidden inside the track, through the soffit or along a trim line.
  5. Fitting the lights. The LED modules go into the track at the chosen spacing. On some systems each light can be angled outward or downward; the installer sets that per section.
  6. Wiring and weatherproofing. Every connection between sections, at corners, and at the controller is made with weatherproof connectors and sealed. Wire runs are enclosed in the track or the structure, not stapled to the outside of the house.
  7. Programming and handover. The installer connects the controller to your Wi-Fi, sets up the app on your phone, loads a few scenes and a schedule, and shows you how to change them. Ask for the warranty terms and the service-call arrangement in writing at this point, not later.

What a DIY kit install involves

Retail kits from Govee, eufy and Lumary are designed so a homeowner can put them up without a contractor, and on the right house they look very good. The box contains a string of LED modules on a cable, a plug-in power adapter, a control box, extension cables, and mounting hardware: small bases with double-sided tape pre-applied, plus screw holes and, in the larger kits, a bag of screws and anchors.   1. Plan the run from the outlet. The system plugs in, so the run has to start within reach of an outlet: an outdoor one where the kit rates its adapter for outdoor use, an indoor one with the cable routed out through the wall where the product page marks the adapter indoor-only, as Govee's Pro page does. The control box and adapter have to live somewhere. Walk the route before you open the box.
  2. Check the length against the house. Kits come in fixed lengths and are extended by joining sections up to a stated maximum. Some cannot be cut to length at all; the Govee Pro line can, the basic Govee 2 and eufy runs cannot. Measure the roofline first. A run that is too long has to loop or double back; one that is too short leaves a dark section.
  3. Clean and mount the bases. The bases stick with adhesive tape. Every manufacturer that sells these also recommends the included screws or clips for a permanent install, and that is the step people skip.
  4. Route the cable around corners and peaks. The cable between lights has a fixed length, so spacing at corners is whatever the cable allows. Keep the cable from being pulled tight over an edge.
  5. Connect sections and power. Join sections with the supplied connectors, connect the control box, plug in the adapter, and pair the app.
  6. Program it. Set scenes and a schedule in the app. Most kits also work with a voice assistant.

The five places DIY installs go wrong

None of these is about the lights. All of them are about the mounting and the environment, and every one is avoidable if you know it is coming.

  • Tape-only mounting. The pre-applied adhesive holds well on a clean, dry, smooth surface in mild weather. On textured fascia, in heat, in freeze-thaw, or after a year of sun, bases let go one at a time and the run starts to sag. The manufacturers' own guidance is to use the screws or clips for a permanent install. If you do one thing from this page, do that.
  • The adapter left in the weather. The light string on most kits is rated to withstand rain. The power adapter and, on some kits, the control unit are not rated to the same standard, and the product pages say so. Plugging the adapter into an exposed outlet and leaving it on the ground is the most common cause of a kit that stops working after the first storm. If the kit rates its adapter for outdoor use, put it under an in-use weatherproof outlet cover off the ground; if the product page marks the adapter indoor-only, as Govee's Pro does, it goes inside and only the low-voltage cable comes out through the wall.
  • Cable stress at the control box. The cable is thinnest and most flexed where it meets the control box and the first light. Pulled tight over a gutter edge or left to swing, it fails there. Leave slack, clip it, and keep the control box where the cable is not under load.
  • A run that cannot be cut. On kits that cannot be cut, the length you bought is the length you have. People discover this at the last gable and improvise: a loop of lights tucked behind the fascia, a section doubled back, a dark stretch. Measure, buy the cuttable version if the roofline is complicated, or accept a simpler run.
  • Two-storey eaves. Everything above is harder on a second-storey roofline: the ladder work, the clean-and-stick, driving screws overhead, routing around peaks. Kits are honest about being easy to install on a single-storey eave. On a two-storey house with several peaks, many homeowners stop halfway, and that half-finished run is what a professional installer is later asked to remove.

Tools, access and timing

A professional crew brings extension ladders, sometimes a lift for tall or awkward sections, a drill, a mitre saw for the track, crimp and seal tools for the connectors, and enough people to hold a track section while another fixes it. A homeowner installing a kit needs a ladder that reaches the eave with room to spare, a drill, and a second person. Do not attempt a second-storey roofline from a stepladder or a roof edge.

Installs happen in dry weather. Adhesive needs a clean, dry, moderately warm surface to bond; track and connectors are easier to work in mild temperatures; and nobody should be on a ladder in wind. Professional installers work through most of the year and, as the permanent Christmas lights guide explains, demand rises sharply before the holidays, so a spring or summer install is the calmer path to a lit house in December.

What "hidden wiring" actually means

Manufacturers and installers both use the phrase, and it means different things. On a professional system it means the wire between lights runs inside the track, the cable between sections runs inside the track, through the soffit or along a trim line, and the feed to the controller goes through a wall rather than along the outside of the house. On a DIY kit it means the cable is neat: clipped along the fascia, tucked under the drip edge, with connectors placed where they do not show. Both can look tidy from the street. Only one is genuinely hidden, and the difference is visible from the driveway by day. Ask an installer to show you a daytime photo of a finished house, and look at the corners and the run to the controller.

After the install

A permanent system is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. Once a year, walk the roofline and look for a base or track section that has moved, a connector that has worked loose, or a light that has stopped responding. Keep the controller's firmware and the app updated. Note where the controller and the power feed are, because the next owner or the next installer will ask. And keep the warranty and the installer's contact details somewhere you can find them in February; a section that drops out is a warranty call on a professional system and a box in the post on a retail kit.
