Holiday Lighting Services Across Michigan
Michigan's holiday lighting season is shaped by lake-effect snow, early darkness, and a population spread across two very different peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula holds the vast majority of the state's population and installer coverage, anchored by the Detroit metro — Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties — where professional lighting crews run tight schedules from late September through mid-November. Grand Rapids on the west side of the state is the second-largest market, and its proximity to Lake Michigan means lake-effect snow can roll in with little warning, compressing the installation window even further than the Detroit side.
The Detroit metro is where the density is. Oakland County suburbs like Troy, Rochester Hills, Bloomfield Hills, and Farmington Hills have well-established lighting businesses that handle everything from compact suburban homes to sprawling estate properties. Wayne County covers Detroit proper and the Downriver communities. Macomb County's Shelby Township, Sterling Heights, and Clinton Township have active crews as well. North of the metro, communities along the I-75 corridor — Auburn Hills, Clarkston, Oxford — are served by both metro-based crews and local operators. Ann Arbor and the Washtenaw County area form a secondary market with strong installer coverage.
West Michigan runs on a different rhythm. Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and the lakeshore communities from Holland down to St. Joseph make up a robust regional market. Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan hits this side of the state harder and earlier than the eastern half, which means west-side installers start and finish their seasons earlier. Traverse City and the northern Lower Peninsula have a shorter season still — September bookings are common for October installations, because November up north is already deep winter. The Upper Peninsula has very limited professional coverage; Marquette is the only city with consistent availability, and the installation season is measured in weeks rather than months.
Michigan's housing stock spans a wide range — century-old Victorians in Detroit's historic neighborhoods, mid-century ranch homes in the inner suburbs, and newer construction in the outer ring communities. Each presents different installation considerations. Older homes have complex rooflines and sometimes fragile exterior materials that require experienced handling. Ranch-style homes are typically straightforward but may have limited outlet access on exterior walls. Newer builds in places like Novi, Canton, and Brighton often have HOA requirements that dictate installation parameters. Lights Local lists only verified, active businesses across Michigan.
